Practical Information & Tips

Visa & Entry Requirements

Most nationalities require an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) or a visa in advance. Check the official Sri Lankan ETA website for the latest requirements. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your departure date.

Best Time to Visit

Sri Lanka has two monsoon seasons. The best time to visit the West and South coasts and the Hill Country is from December to March. For the East coast, May to September is ideal. The shoulder seasons (April, October, November) can offer good weather and fewer crowds.

Getting Around

Options include private drivers (recommended for convenience), trains (scenic and affordable, especially in the hill country), buses (local and cheap but can be crowded), and domestic flights for longer distances.

Accommodation Options

Sri Lanka offers a wide range, from luxury resorts and boutique hotels to charming guesthouses, homestays, and budget-friendly hostels. Booking in advance, especially during peak season, is advisable.

Currency & Budgeting

The local currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). ATMs are widely available in cities. Budgeting depends on your travel style, but expect to spend around $30-50 for budget travel, $50-100 for mid-range, and $100+ for luxury per day.

Health & Safety

Consult your doctor for recommended vaccinations. Drink bottled water. Be aware of local customs and dress modestly in religious sites. It's generally safe, but always be mindful of your belongings.
